Cameroonian Certificate of Nationality: What It Is For, Where to Apply, When to Translate It

The Cameroonian certificate of nationality is the paper that shows an authority you are Cameroonian. This guide sets out what the law says about who issues it, what no official page we read makes clear, and when you will need a translation.

In short

  • The certificate of nationality states that you hold Cameroonian nationality. Under section 42 of the Nationality Code, it is valid evidence until the contrary is proved.
  • The law gives the power to issue it only to magistrates of the civil courts sitting at sub-divisional headquarters. So you apply at the court, not at the council or the police.
  • If you are refused, the same section lets you refer the matter to the Minister of Justice, who decides whether it should be issued.
  • No official page we read lists the documents, fees or timeline: ask the court registry, or your consulate if you live abroad.
  • If the body receiving your file wants the certificate in the other official language, CamerTrad translates it: 10,000 FCFA per page.

What is the Cameroonian certificate of nationality for?

It proves you are Cameroonian when an authority asks for that proof. Law No. 1968-LF-3 of 11 June 1968 on the Cameroon Nationality Code sets out its weight: the certificate is good evidence “until the contrary is proved”. In plain terms, whoever disputes your nationality has to prove otherwise.

It is more than a form. Under section 42, it names the legal provision that makes you Cameroonian and lists the documents used to establish it. For example, section 6 of the code provides that a legitimate child born of Cameroonian parents is Cameroonian: that is the kind of provision the certificate cites.

Who needs one, and for which file, is for the body asking for it to say. Read its document list before you start.

The steps, from application to translation

The law says who issues the certificate, not how the practical procedure runs. Where no official source gives detail, the steps below stay cautious. Translation only comes in at step 5, and only if it is asked for.

  1. 1

Ask the registry for the document list

Go to the civil court at your sub-divisional headquarters. No official page we read publishes the list of documents: the registry gives it to you.

  2. 2

Gather the documents that prove your nationality

The certificate must cite the documents that establish your nationality. Prepare the ones the registry named, with your names spelt the same way on each.

  3. 3

File the application at the court

Filing follows the court’s own rules. If you live abroad, first ask your consulate how it handles this document.

  4. 4

Collect the certificate and read it through

Check your name, your dates, the legal provision cited and the list of documents. A mistake is easier to fix before you send your file than after.

  5. 5

Have it translated, if the receiving body asks

If the receiving body wants English and your certificate is in French, or the other way round, send CamerTrad a photo of it. The sworn translator translates it in full, stamps and notes included, and you receive a PDF.

  6. 6

Attach the certificate and its translation to your file

Submit the original, or the copy asked for, together with the translation, following the instructions of the body receiving your file.

What the 1968 Nationality Code says

Three sections of the code cover the certificate and disputes about nationality:

  • Section 42(1): only magistrates of the civil courts sitting at sub-divisional headquarters may issue a certificate of Cameroonian nationality to anyone who shows they hold that nationality.
  • Section 42(3): if you are refused a certificate, you may refer the matter to the Minister of Justice, who decides whether it should be issued.
  • Section 41: the ordinary civil courts alone may hear disputes about nationality. The case goes before the court of the domicile, or failing that the residence, of the person concerned.
  • Section 43: the rules of application, in particular on proof of nationality, are laid down by decree.

We could not read that 1968 implementing decree when we consulted the sources. For the exact procedure, documents, fees and timeline, the court registry remains the place to ask.

If you live abroad

The code only speaks of civil court magistrates. We found no official page from a Cameroonian embassy or consulate describing how to apply for a certificate of nationality from abroad. Before you make plans, write to your consulate and ask how it proceeds, and whether a relative can file the application for you in Cameroon.

The translation, on the other hand, is done fully at a distance. You send a photo of the certificate on WhatsApp and receive the PDF by WhatsApp or e-mail. If you need the paper copy, a relative can collect it by appointment in Yaoundé, at carrefour Tam-Tam, or it can be sent by parcel to another town in Cameroon.

Documents to translate for this procedure

A translation only helps if the body receiving your file works in the other language. These are the papers that often go with the certificate.

  • Judgments and powers of attorneyThe certificate of nationality is issued by a magistrate. It is translated in full, like a judgment, page by page, stamps and notes included. If your birth certificate was re-established by a supplementary judgment, that judgment may be asked for as well.
  • Birth certificateThe birth certificate often goes with proof of nationality, since the code ties nationality of origin to parentage.
  • Passport and ID cardPassport or national ID card: the receiving body may ask for them with the certificate to check that the names match.
  • Translating from abroadYou are outside Cameroon: everything is handled by WhatsApp and e-mail, with no travel.

Translation: 10,000 FCFA per page, fixed price. Urgent 24 hours (French ⇄ English): 20,000 FCFA per page. Work out the total for my file

Mistakes that cost time

  • Looking for the certificate at the council or the police station: the law gives the power to issue it to civil court magistrates.
  • Relying on a document list found online instead of the registry’s own list.
  • Having a certificate translated when the receiving body already accepts the language it is written in.
  • Names spelt differently on the birth certificate, the ID card and the certificate. Tell us about the difference in your first message.
  • Sending a cropped or blurred photo: the back, stamps and notes must be readable to be translated.
  • Giving up after a refusal without knowing that section 42 lets you refer the matter to the Minister of Justice.

What CamerTrad does, and what it does not

Our translations are done by a sworn translator of the Centre Court of Appeal. We translate your certificate of nationality and the papers that go with it, from French into English or English into French, in full and with the translator’s seal. Turnaround is 48 hours; for urgent files, 24 hours at 20,000 FCFA per page.

We do not apply for the certificate on your behalf, we do not file anything at the court or the consulate, and we give no legal advice on your nationality. The receiving body sets its own requirements; we cannot promise it will accept a translation.

Send a photo of your certificate of nationality: we tell you the page count and the total before any payment.
