Consecutive or liaison interpreting: when you need it

Interpreting is translation of the spoken word, on the spot. You need it when two people or two groups have to understand each other face to face: an appointment at a government office, a job or admission interview, a meeting with an English-speaking or French-speaking partner, a ceremony or a family gathering where not everyone shares a language.

In consecutive interpreting, the speaker says a few sentences and pauses, then the interpreter gives them in the other language. It suits interviews, short speeches and small meetings. In liaison interpreting, the interpreter stays with one person or a small group and moves between the two languages as the conversation goes, for example during an appointment or a visit.

We work between French and English. Any other language is on quote: name it in your message and we will tell you what is possible.

What to send us

  • The date and start time.
  • The exact place: town, neighbourhood, building.
  • How long it should last, breaks included, and the likely finishing time.
  • The languages: who speaks French, who speaks English, and which way the interpreting goes.
  • The subject of the meeting and how many people will take part.
  • Any preparation material: agenda, programme, list of names, text of speeches.

With these details, the quote confirms whether the job can be done, where, and the price. Without them, we have to ask one question at a time and the reply takes longer.

Where interpreting requests go wrong

Mixing up interpreting and written translation. An interpreter translates speech. If you need a sealed translation of a document for a file, that is a written sworn translation, ordered separately and priced per page.

Asking too late. Interpreters get booked. A request sent the day before is less likely to work out than one sent several days ahead. Write as soon as the date is set, even if the time is still open.

Holding the papers until the day. An agenda, a slide deck or a speech read beforehand lets the interpreter prepare terms, acronyms and names. Handed over on the spot, it is of little use.

Underestimating the length. In consecutive mode everything is said twice, so a one-hour meeting runs longer with an interpreter. Give the real length, breaks and late starts included.

Forgetting proper names. Names of people, companies, places and acronyms: send them in writing before the meeting so they come out right.

Interpreting price: on quote via WhatsApp

The price of interpreting depends on the date, the place, the length, the languages and the subject. So there is no single rate: you get a fixed quote on WhatsApp, based on your request.

The quote confirms three things: whether the job can be done on the day you want, where it takes place, and the price. Nothing is binding until you accept it.

The total in the quote is the total you pay. Orange Money, MTN Mobile Money or bank transfer.

After you send your request

We reply on WhatsApp, first with any questions if something is missing, then with the quote. It sets out the booking and payment terms.

Send preparation material as soon as you have it, even if it is incomplete. If the programme, time or place changes, tell us at once, as the quote may need revising.

Also need documents translated in writing for the same file? A sworn translation costs 10,000 FCFA per page, 48 hours between French and English. You can ask for both in the same message.

The interpreter renders what is said, faithfully. They do not take sides and do not give legal advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an interpreter and a translator?

An interpreter translates speech, on the spot. A translator works on written documents. For a paper to add to a file, you need a written translation.

How much does a French English interpreter cost?

The price is on quote via WhatsApp. It depends on the date, place, length and subject. The quote is fixed.

Can you work outside Yaoundé?

Give the place in your request. Whether it can be done, the venue and the price are confirmed in the quote.

How far ahead should I ask?

As soon as the date is set. The earlier the request, the easier it is to confirm.

Do you interpret other languages?

Any language other than French and English is on quote. Tell us which one on WhatsApp.
