French to English translation Cameroon: when you need it
Cameroon has two official languages, and most of us move between them without a second thought. An official file is different. The office receiving it wants every paper in the language it works in, carrying a sworn translator’s seal.
French into English is mostly for files leaving the country: a WES credential evaluation, a study or visa application for the UK, the US or English-speaking Canada, a place at an English-medium university at home or abroad. Birth certificates, diplomas, transcripts, police records and work attestations are the papers that come up most.
English into French is the other half of the work, and much of it comes from the North West and South West. Papers issued in Bamenda, Buea, Limbe or Kumba, such as a GCE certificate, a birth certificate or a transcript, may have to be read in French: for a concours, a French-speaking administration, a school in France or Belgium, or an employer that works in French.
For Canada, the language depends on the province and the body handling your file. Some work in English, others in French. Check which one they expect before you order, so you do not pay for the wrong translation.

What to send us
- A sharp photo of every page, edges visible, no finger or shadow on the text.
- Front and back of each document, with stamps, signatures and marginal notes readable.
- The photo page of your passport, so your names are spelt exactly as they appear there.
- Which way it goes: French into English, or English into French.
- Who will receive it: WES, a university, an embassy, an employer, an exam board, a ministry.
- Your submission date, so we can tell you whether 48 hours is enough or you need the urgent service.
A scanned PDF works too. If several documents are going in the same file, send them together and they are quoted as one order.
Common mistakes with French and English documents
Translating the wrong way. A document already in English does not need an English translation. Check which language the office wants for each paper. It is up to the receiving office to set its own requirements.
Documents that are already bilingual. Some Cameroonian papers carry both languages, in full or in part. Send them anyway. We tell you what still needs translating, and the receiving office decides whether the original is enough.
Diploma names. A Probatoire, a Baccalauréat or a GCE Advanced Level is never swapped for a made-up foreign equivalent. We keep the official name and make it clear to the reader. Deciding what it equals abroad is the evaluator’s job.
Names that differ from the passport. Order of names, a second given name, a missing letter: a gap between a document and your passport can hold a file up. We copy the spelling on the document and point out any difference we spot.
Dates. 03/04/2001 is the 3rd of April in Cameroon and the UK, but the 4th of March in the US. Where a date could be misread, we write the month in words.

Price and turnaround between French and English
The price is 10,000 FCFA per page, fixed, whichever way the translation goes. We count the pages of the document, not the photos. A back page counts if it carries text, a stamp or a marginal note; a card printed on both sides, such as a driving licence or an ID card, counts as one page.
Standard turnaround is 48 hours. If your deadline is close, the urgent service delivers in 24 hours at 20,000 FCFA per page, fixed, for French and English only. Nothing goes out in under 24 hours. Either way, the clock starts on receipt of payment.
The price covers the translation, the layout, the translator’s seal and signature, and the PDF. Legalisation, delivery costs and fees charged by other bodies are not included.
The total quoted on WhatsApp is the total you pay. Orange Money, MTN Mobile Money or bank transfer.
After the translation, at home or abroad
You receive the sealed translation as a PDF on WhatsApp or by email. If the office wants paper, collect it by appointment in Yaoundé, Carrefour Tam-Tam. If you are in Douala, Buea, Bamenda or elsewhere, it is sent as a parcel through a travel agency or a delivery service.
Living abroad? You can order without setting foot in Cameroon. Pay by international bank transfer, through a relative at home by Orange Money or MTN Mobile Money, or through Western Union or a similar money transfer service. The PDF reaches you on WhatsApp or by email; paper copies go by express courier, at your cost, with the fee given before sending.
Some offices also want the original document legalised, for example at MINREX in Yaoundé. CamerTrad does not legalise documents or submit files. Check the current list with the body receiving your file before you order.
