Arabic translation: when you need it

In the north of Cameroon, Arabic is part of daily life for many families, and neighbouring Chad has it as an official language alongside French. Documents written in Arabic therefore travel between the two countries: attestations, school certificates, family papers, trade documents.

Further away, Cameroonians go to study or work in North Africa and the Middle East. Depending on the country and the body, a birth certificate, a diploma or a transcript may have to be presented in Arabic. On the way back it is the reverse: a degree or work attestation issued in Arabic sometimes has to be read in English or French by an employer or an administration in Cameroon.

Businesses working with Arabic-speaking partners also have contracts, invoices or articles of association translated.

The receiving office sets the language and format it wants. Check its current list before you order.

Where Arabic translations go wrong

Certified, not sworn. For Arabic, this is a certified translation by a partner translator. It is not presented as a sworn translation. If the office requires a particular type of translator, ask it before you order.

Names in Latin letters. A name that comes from Arabic can be spelt several ways in Latin letters. The translation follows your passport; tell us about any other spelling already used in your papers.

Dates. Some Arabic documents carry a Hijri calendar date, sometimes next to the Gregorian one. The translation gives the dates exactly as they appear on the document.

Stamps and handwriting. A faint stamp or a handwritten note is hard to read on a blurred photo. Send the best image you can: what cannot be read cannot be translated.

Whether the office accepts it. Nobody can promise a translation will be accepted: the receiving office sets its own requirements. Ask it before you order.

What to send us

  • A sharp photo of every page, taken straight, edges visible.
  • For Arabic text, a photo with no edge cut off: the script runs right to left, and a cropped edge loses the start of each line.
  • Front and back, with stamps and handwritten notes readable.
  • The photo page of your passport, for the spelling of your names in Latin letters.
  • The language you have and the one you need: Arabic, English or French.
  • The office that will receive the translation, and which country it is in.

A scanned PDF works too. The clearer the image, the faster the quote comes back.

Price and turnaround for Arabic

Price and turnaround are given on quote via WhatsApp. The quote comes once your document has been seen, so send a photo of every page and tell us both languages.

Pages are still counted one by one: we count the pages of the document, not the photos, and a back page counts if it carries text, a stamp or a note.

Urgent work is on quote as well. The amount in the quote is the amount you pay.

Orange Money, MTN Mobile Money or bank transfer, once you have accepted the quote.

After the translation

You receive the translation as a PDF on WhatsApp or by email. Paper copies are collected by appointment in Yaoundé, Carrefour Tam-Tam, or sent as a parcel to your town, whether that is Garoua, Maroua, Ngaoundéré or elsewhere.

Depending on the country and the body, the original may need legalising before you submit it. CamerTrad does not legalise documents or submit files. Check the current list with the body receiving your file.

From abroad, you can order remotely and pay by international transfer, through a relative by Mobile Money, or by money transfer.
