Chinese translation: what it is for

China takes in Cameroonian students, many of them on scholarships, across a wide range of subjects. To enrol, the university or the authorities may ask for some papers in Chinese: birth certificate, diplomas, transcripts. The list depends on the institution, so check it with them.

On the way back, the need flips. A degree, a transcript or an internship attestation written in Chinese has to be read in English or French by an employer or an administration in Cameroon.

Trade with China is the other big reason. Traders and companies have contracts, invoices, product sheets or supplier correspondence translated, so they know exactly what they are signing and what they are buying.

The receiving office sets the language and format it wants. Check its current list before you order.

What to send us

  • A sharp photo of every page, close enough for each character to be read.
  • Front and back, with red seals and signatures.
  • The photo page of your passport, for the spelling of your names.
  • The language you have and the one you need: Chinese, English or French.
  • For trade documents, every page, annexes and tables included.
  • The office or business partner that will receive the translation.

An original PDF reads better than a screenshot, so send it if you have it.

Where Chinese translations go wrong

Certified, not sworn. For Chinese, this is a certified translation by a partner translator. It is not presented as a sworn translation. If the office requires a particular type of translator, ask it before you order.

Simplified or traditional characters. Mainland China uses simplified characters; some other places use traditional ones. Tell us where the document is going and the translation follows local usage.

Your name in Chinese documents. A Cameroonian name may be transcribed into Chinese characters or kept in Latin letters. The translation follows your passport; tell us about any spelling the university or partner already uses.

Company names. A Chinese company has an official name in Chinese, and sometimes a different English trading name. We keep the name as it appears on the document and do not invent another.

Dates. Chinese writes dates as year, month, day. The translation puts them in the usual English or French order, with the month in words.

Price and turnaround for Chinese

Price and turnaround are given on quote via WhatsApp. The quote comes once the document has been seen, so send every page and tell us both languages.

Pages are still counted one by one: we count the pages of the document, not the photos, and a back page counts if it carries text, a stamp or a note.

Urgent work is on quote as well. The amount in the quote is the amount you pay.

Orange Money, MTN Mobile Money or bank transfer, once you have accepted the quote.

After the translation

You receive the translation as a PDF on WhatsApp or by email. Paper copies are collected by appointment in Yaoundé, Carrefour Tam-Tam, or sent as a parcel to Douala or another town.

Depending on the country and the body, the original may need legalising before you submit it. CamerTrad does not legalise documents, submit files or give legal advice on a contract. Check the current list with the body receiving your file.

In China at the moment? Order remotely and pay by international transfer, through a relative by Mobile Money, or by money transfer.
